Home Remodeling in Reading, MA

Reading is built around its Common. The streets closest to it, including Woburn Street and Summer Avenue, hold some of the town’s oldest houses, and both the Common and Woburn Street are listed on the National Register as historic districts. Farther out, the town fills in with the subdivisions that followed the Second World War.

The houses. Near the center you find 19th-century houses of several styles, with high ceilings, plaster walls, front and back parlors and additions made by many owners over many decades. In the later neighborhoods the pattern is capes, garrison colonials and split-entry houses: three bedrooms, a bath and a half, a kitchen sized for a different era, and a garage or breezeway that became the everyday entrance.

The projects that suit them. In the older houses, the work is often about untangling earlier renovations: a kitchen added at the back with a low ceiling, a bathroom fitted into a former closet, floors at three different heights. A measured plan of the whole first floor usually comes before any decision about a single room. In the postwar houses, the usual wish list is consistent: open the kitchen to the family room, turn the side entrance into a proper mudroom with a bench and storage, and add a second full bathroom upstairs. Split-entry lower levels finish well when the ceiling height and the heating are planned first.

How we approach it. Design comes first, with drawings, selections and a priced scope settled before demolition. Where a wall carries load, a Massachusetts-registered professional engineer designs the new support, and permit requirements are confirmed with the Reading building department during planning.
