Home Remodeling in Winchester, MA

Winchester is an architecturally consistent town. Streets of Victorian, Shingle Style and Colonial Revival houses run out from the town center, and several areas, among them Wedgemere, Firth-Glengarry and Winchester Center, are recognized historic districts.

The houses. Much of Winchester was built between the late 1800s and the 1930s, for families who expected formal rooms: a front hall with a main stair, a separate dining room, a butler’s pantry, a back stair to the kitchen. The construction is substantial, with plaster on lath, deep casings, paneled doors and hardwood floors laid with borders. The town’s Historical Commission reviews proposed demolition of older buildings, and many owners choose to renovate within the original house.

The projects that suit them. The kitchen is usually where the plan no longer fits. Combining a small kitchen, a pantry and a back hall into one working room takes careful structural planning, because those partitions often carry load. Upstairs, a primary bathroom is commonly made from a small bedroom or a dressing room, which means new plumbing routes through finished ceilings below. Finish carpentry matters more here than almost anywhere: new casings, crown and baseboard have to match profiles that are no longer stocked, and are often milled to order.

How we approach it. We measure the existing trim before we draw anything new. Our designers detail the new work to sit beside the original, and steam radiators, plaster and old wiring are looked for during planning, so that fewer surprises are left for the middle of the job.
